Swimmer Luana Alonso Removed from Olympic Village for ‘Inappropriate’ Behavior
Paraguayan Athlete Suspended from Athletes’ Living Quarters
Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso has been removed from the athlete village at the Paris Olympics due to allegations of creating an “inappropriate atmosphere.” Alonso, who announced her retirement at the age of 20 after failing to advance in the 100-meters butterfly heats, has since left Paris and returned to the United States.
Alonso, who boasts over half a million Instagram followers, shared an update on the social media platform indicating her departure from Paris, showing herself driving towards a border control crossing.
The details of Alonso’s removal were initially kept under wraps, with Paraguay’s Olympic chief providing only a vague statement about her behavior. Larissa Schaerer, a former Olympic tennis player for Paraguay, commented: “Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay. We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the athletes’ village.”
The Olympic village, which houses around 14,250 competitors, offers athletes the choice of whether to stay on-site.
An Underwhelming Olympics and Sudden Retirement
Alonso’s performance at the Olympics was disappointing, as she finished sixth in her heat, narrowly missing out on the semi-finals by 0.24 seconds to Georgia’s Ana Nizharadze. Following her elimination, Alonso dramatically announced her retirement from swimming but chose to remain in Paris for a brief period.
Reflecting on her career, Alonso stated: “Swimming: thank you for allowing me to dream, you taught me to fight, to try, perseverance, sacrifice, discipline, and many more. I gave you part of my life, and I don’t change it for anything in the world because I lived the best experiences of my life. You gave me thousands of joys, friends from other countries that I will always carry in my heart, unique opportunities. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon.”
