Reggae for the Soul show at Rotary Park Saturday

For years, Rocky Rochowiak has harbored a vision of hosting a reggae event in Ludington.

On Saturday, Sept. 2, starting at 6 p.m., this vision materializes with the premiere of Christian Surfers Present Reggae for the Soul Show at Rotary Park, Ludington.

Rochowiak expressed his surprise at the absence of a vibrant reggae scene along the Lake Michigan coast, considering his longstanding wish to introduce such an event in Ludington. Although he’s a seasonal Ludington dweller and a wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service, he aspires to permanently reside in the city.

His passion for reggae and Christian gospel music, coupled with his connections to bands fusing these genres, inspired this unique event. “It’s going to be a faith-centric reggae rock performance, unlike anything you’ve seen around the Great Lakes,” Rochowiak shared.

The evening commences with two Michigan-native performances, including Bob Marley covers. The main act features Jah Pickney, an acclaimed gospel reggae artist from Canada, accompanied by his wife, Mari-eve. Rochowiak describes their style as a vibrant blend of reggae rock, rap, dance hall music, and Jamaican Creole, ensuring a lively atmosphere.

While Jah Pickney has graced some of the world’s renowned reggae festivals, he’s set to deliver a free performance in Ludington. Emphasizing the event’s distinctiveness, Rochowiak envisions it becoming a landmark Ludington tradition, attracting visitors from various locales. He’s optimistic about its potential growth, hoping to eventually host it at Waterfront Park, drawing crowds comparable to the Rhythm & Dunes concerts.

The two-hour musical fiesta will be followed by a screening of the cult-classic Great Lakes surfer film, “Unsalted.” Organized by the Christian Surfers of Great Lakes, the event promises a harmonious blend of faith, reggae, and surfing vibes.

Rochowiak’s aspiration is for attendees to leave with a lasting impression, remembering the event for more than just a night. Additional features include a snack stall by the Ludington Business Professional of America, a Christian Surfers booth, and an artist merchandise stand. Attendees are encouraged to bring along seating essentials like chairs and blankets.
