MLB pays $185M to settle minor leaguers’ minimum wage lawsuit
Major League Baseball (MLB) has fulfilled its obligation of a $185 million settlement from a lawsuit brought forward by minor league players who alleged violations of minimum wage laws.
According to the settlement terms agreed upon last year, about 24,000 players from the period 2009-22 were potentially eligible for a share of the funds. The estimated payouts to players are projected to average between $5,000 and $5,500. MLB announced on Monday that it had transferred the funds to JND Legal Administration, with the expectation that payments will be made by August 14.
The minor league players formed a union last September, and this spring they agreed to a five-year labor contract that more than doubled their salaries.
The settlement includes all players who held minor league contracts and played in the California League for a minimum of seven consecutive days starting February 7, 2010, through the settlement’s preliminary approval on August 26 last year. It also covers players who took part in spring training, extended spring training, or instructional leagues in Florida from February 7, 2009, through last August 26; and players who participated in similar training or leagues in Arizona from February 7, 2011, through last August 26.
The lawsuit was originally filed in 2014 by Aaron Senne, a first baseman/outfielder selected in the 10th round by the then-Florida Marlins in 2009 and retired in 2013, along with two other retired players who were lower-round picks: Kansas City Royals infielder Michael Liberto and San Francisco Giants pitcher Oliver Odle. They alleged violations of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and state minimum wage and overtime requirements for an estimated 50 to 60 hour work week.
