MLB Considers Hosting Games in Germany and Netherlands

As MLB gears up for a two-game series in London this weekend, the league is exploring the potential of Germany and the Netherlands as future destinations to expand its presence across Europe.

Chris Marinak, MLB’s chief operations and strategy officer, expressed the league’s openness to consider Germany and the Netherlands for future games, stating, “We want to hit our priority markets, but we may rotate around to a Germany in the long run or if there’s a facility in the Netherlands that we could potentially look at. But for the medium term, we’re really focused on the UK as our primary vehicle.”

London Stadium, which hosted MLB’s European debut in 2019 with a sold-out crowd of nearly 60,000 fans witnessing the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox clash, will once again welcome the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals for the upcoming series on Friday and Saturday.

Earlier this season, MLB organized two games in Mexico City between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres. Paris is also a strong contender to host MLB games next season, marking the league’s first presence in France. Additionally, MLB has already scheduled a return to London in 2026.

According to the AP, Britain stands as MLB’s largest market in Europe in terms of broadcast revenue, merchandise sales, and digital product subscribers. However, it still lags behind Mexico, Japan, South Korea, China, and Australia in terms of overall market size. MLB inked a five-year broadcast deal with the BBC in the UK last year, signifying its confidence in the country as a platform for growth in the European market.

“We feel like the U.K. offers us a good model for growth in the Europe market,” Marinak commented, emphasizing MLB’s positive outlook on the potential for expansion and success in the region.
