Knights baseball: Corvallis gets past Portland for shot at another WCL title

“Corvallis clinched their place for a shot at yet another West Coast League baseball championship title.

They benefited from their consistently strong pitching throughout the playoffs and, in a decisive moment, scored three consecutive runs to break free from a 1-1 deadlock against Portland on Saturday.

This led to a definitive 4-1 win in the WCL South divisional championship match at Goss Stadium.

The next challenge for Corvallis is Victoria in the league’s title game, slated for 8 p.m. Monday at Goss. With a season record of 46-16, Corvallis aims for their seventh consecutive WCL title and their 10th in the 18 seasons played.

Over the years, Corvallis has impressively been the league runner-up four times and has featured in 10 out of the last 11 WCL title deciders.

Victoria, meanwhile, made an impressive comeback from a 5-0 trail to narrowly defeat Bellingham 7-6 in Saturday’s North championship in British Columbia. Notably, Corvallis didn’t face either Bellingham or Victoria in the regular season.

Saturday saw Corvallis’ starting pitcher, Kaden Segel, deliver a solid three-inning performance, conceding just two hits and one run. The subsequent innings saw Neil Feist and Sean Wiese continue the team’s strong pitching display.

The scoring for Corvallis started early with Mason Le’s double in the first inning, promptly followed by Sam Stem’s left-field single. While Portland managed to level the score in the third, Corvallis swiftly regained the lead, thanks to Le’s strategic moves around the bases. They further extended their lead in the sixth and seventh.

Wiese’s performance in the last two innings against the Pickles was efficient, wrapping up the game with ease.

Both Howard and Stem stood out with three hits each, and Hott contributed with two.

Throughout the regular season, Corvallis dominated Portland with six straight wins. In the South divisional round, despite an initial setback against Cowlitz, Corvallis emerged victorious in the subsequent two games, while Portland managed back-to-back wins against Ridgefield.”
