The premise is simple: sleep more, progress in the game. But does it genuinely promote more sleep? And is there a loophole?

My expertise in the Pokemon universe is minimal at best. I became aware of Pokemon Go when players would abruptly halt in public places, triggering an overwhelming annoyance in me. Now and then, I still spot folks of all ages fixated on their devices, trying to collect every Pokemon.

To me, Pikachu is synonymous with Ryan Reynolds’ voice due to the fragments of Pokemon: Detective Pikachu I watched in-flight before nodding off. Hence, it wasn’t illogical for me to hope for a charming Deadpool-like voiceover when I tried Pokemon Sleep.

But alas, no such luck. Essentially, this app is a sleep tracker with a gaming twist. Every morning, you receive a feedback on your sleep quality, complete with a brief sound recording – perhaps, in case you’re curious if you snored.

I tested Pokemon Sleep for a month. Here’s my experience.

HOW IT WORKS:

The app is user-friendly with no complex setups or gadgets. Just go to bed, ensuring your phone is face-down beside your pillow. This placement is crucial for accurate sound detection to track your sleep.

I gathered that Pokemon Sleep is akin to its predecessors, revolving around exploration. This version involves collaborating with Professor Neroli (named after a sleep-enhancing essential oil) to study Pokemon sleep patterns.

You’re assigned a Snorlax and a location to observe Pokemon napping beside it. Additionally, you’re paired with Pikachu – sans Reynolds’ vocal charm.

The more you sleep, the more Pokemon your Snorlax lures for your observation. For instance, an Eevee might appear, nearly dozing off, or a Diglett napping beneath stones. One morning, the sight of a Cubone, grieving its departed mother in its dreams, nearly kept me in bed.

The game introduced me to intriguing Pokemon, including Toxicroak resembling a superhero and a creature known as Magnemite, appearing as a cluster of floating metallic fragments.

The moment a peculiar Slowbro with a Shellder latched onto its tail appeared, I was puzzled. What was the correct course of action? Feed them? Separate them?

Food plays a vital role. Feeding these critters Poke Biscuits encourages them to join your team, which, in turn, attracts more Pokemon, creating a cycle of accumulating points, making friends, and hopefully, sleeping more.

DOES IT REALLY PROMOTE SLEEP?

Sleep is the currency for Sleep Points, redeemable for in-game items like Poke Biscuits and other Pokemon Sleep goods. There’s a daily free biscuit, but it’s barely adequate.

Initially, these rewards did motivate me to aim for an optimal 8.5 hours of sleep nightly. Even short naps count, though they must be at least 1.5 hours, which seems unusually long.

On my inaugural night, despite hitting the bed at 11 pm intending to rise at 7 am, sleep eluded me till after 2 am. Continuously checking my phone to ensure the app was functioning and anticipating the Pokemon I’d encounter the next day resulted in a mere five hours of rest.
