Background

The Werder Bremen Bundesliga Football Club, commonly referred to as Werder Bremen or simply Werder, is a German professional football club based in Bremen, Lower Saxony. The club was formed in Weser-Ems in 1878 and played its first football match in November of that year. It has played continuously in the top flight of German football since the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963 and has won the Bundesliga title once (in 1974).

The team’s traditional colours are black and white, and their home ground since 1907 has been Waldstadion. Werder Bremen have participated in European competition 24 times, reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup on two occasions (1985 and 2004) as well as the quarter-finals of both the UEFA Champions League (1994) and Europa League (2010).

Werder reached the final of the Intertoto Cup twice, losing both finals to Ajax Amsterdam: first on aggregate after two legs (1996), then after a single leg at home (1998). In 2007–08 they qualified for their third consecutive Champions League group stage but were eliminated by Liverpool with three points after a draw at Anfield.
