History of Udinese Calcio
Udinese Calcio was founded in 1896 by a group of students from the city of Udine, in the north-eastern region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. The club has played its entire history in Serie A, the top flight of Italian football, except for one season (1928–29) in Serie B. The club’s best finish came in 2005 when it finished as runners-up to Juventus.
Udinese’s first ever match was played on 15 December 1896 against Torre, which ended in a 1–1 draw. In their second season of existence, Udinese finished bottom of the table with only two points, but they were back up to sixth place by 1898. They improved rapidly over the next few years and were crowned champions for the first time in 1904–05.
After World War I, Udinese reached the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia for the first time, but they were beaten 2–1 by eventual winners Genoa. They also reached the final of the Mitropa Cup in 1929 but lost 2–1 to Austrian side Rapid Vienna.
In 1938–39, Udinese finished third in Serie A and went on to win their second Coppa Italia title, defeating Roma 3–0 in the final. After being relegated to Serie B during World War II, they bounced back and won promotion back to Serie A in 1947–48.
