The History of SSC Napoli
SSC Napoli was founded in 1926 by a group of young Neapolitan footballers who were unhappy with their local club. They chose the name Napoli, which is the Italian word for “new”, and adopted the city’s colours of blue and white. The club has always been based in Naples and has never been relegated from Serie A, the top level of Italian football.
Napoli had some success in the early years, winning the league title in 1934 and the Coppa Italia in 1962. However, they did not really become a force to be reckoned with until Diego Maradona joined the team in 1984. With Maradona leading the way, Napoli won their first ever European trophy, the UEFA Cup, in 1989. They also won two more Serie A titles, in 1987 and 1990.
Since Maradona’s retirement, Napoli have not been able to replicate that level of success, but they are still one of Italy’s top clubs. In recent years, they have finished second in Serie A twice and have qualified for the Champions League several times. Their current manager is Maurizio Sarri and their star player is Lorenzo Insigne.
The Club’s Colors and Badge
SSC Napoli’s colors are navy blue and white, and their badge features a golden eagle perched atop a mountain. The club’s away kit is all white with a blue and gold eagle crest, while their third kit is all black with a gold eagle crest.
The Stadium
The Stadio San Paolo is a football stadium in the western suburb of Fuorigrotta in Naples, Italy, and is the home of Serie A club SSC Napoli. The stadium was originally built in 1959 and has undergone several renovations over the years. It currently has a capacity of 60,240.
The Stadio San Paolo is one of the largest stadiums in Italy and has hosted numerous high-profile matches, including the 1990 World Cup semi-final between Argentina and Italy. The stadium was also home to the 1984 European Cup final between Liverpool and Roma.
SS Lazio have also played at the Stadio San Paolo on occasions, most notably during the 1974–75 season when they shared the ground with Napoli due to repairs being carried out at their own Stadio Olimpico.
The stadium has hosted four Italian Super Cups (in 1990, 1991, 2014 and 2020), three UEFA Cup finals (in 1989, 1990 and 2012) and two UEFA Champions League finals (in 1987 and 2020).
