It was formed in 2009 as a successor of the Regionalliga Nordost, and is currently the second tier of the German football league system. The league has been operating under its current name since June 2014. RB Leipzig won promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history in 2017, having finished first in their division that season.

The RB Leipzig Bundesliga consists of ten teams, with two relegation spots available. Seasons run from early March to late May, with a total of 38 rounds played. Each team plays 46 games, totalling 380 goals being scored (an average of 2.5 goals per game).

The top four teams qualify for the German Cup, while the fifth-place team qualifies for the UEFA Europa League if they have not qualified for either cup through their league position.

RB Leipzig were founded on 10 July 2009 by Red Bull GmbH as an investment company and sports club.
