Quevilly Rouen is the largest city in the Metropole of Rouen, with a population of around 128,000 in 2012. The city is located about 120 km west of Paris and about 25 km east of Le Mans. Quevilly was founded by the Romans in 72 AD as Rousillonum. The name means “red hill”, likely due to its red soil. It became an important Roman town, and was the capital of Britannia Superior from 211 to 230 AD.
Quevilly was sacked by the Visigoths in 414 AD and by the Burgundians in 447 AD. In 843 it became part of Normandy, and in 1067 Jacques Cartier granted it to Jean d’Aulnay, seigneur de Quevilly and counts palatine of Champagne. The city passed through various hands over the next centuries, including that of Pierre de Montlaur-Ducasse (1612-1684), who developed iron ore deposits near the city.
On 1 November 1883 Quevilly became officially part of Rouen metropolitan area, which at that time had a population of 150,000 people. During World War II Quevilly was bombed by Allied Forces on several occasions: on 16 May 1944; on 9 August 1944; and on 21 December 1944. On 23 October 1998 a large explosion occurred at Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune steelworks, which caused extensive damage to the city centre and killed 29
Quevilly Ugly Sweater
Quevilly Rouen is a city located in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region of north-western France. The metropolitan area has a population of around 345,000 and covers an area of 431.5 km². The city is situated on the River Seine and is composed of two parts – the old town, which overlooks the river, and the new town, which was built on land reclaimed from the river. Quevilly Rouen is also home to several sports clubs such as Racing Rouen Métropole football club, who play in Ligue 1.
In order to support its football team, Quevilly Rouen Metropole decided to create an ugly sweater contest in order to raise money for the club. All participants had to purchase a sweater for €40 and then turn it into the city hall with their name and date of birth. The goal was for people to wear their ugly sweaters during local matches and help cheer on their local team. In total, over 1,500 sweaters were collected and turned in!
