Prince Andrew was born on February 19, 1960, at Buckingham Palace, London. He is the third child and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He has two older sisters: Princess Anne and Princess Margaret Rose. His godparents were Sir Peter Scott (the son of Captain Scott) and Dame Patricia Mountbatten (the daughter of Earl Mountbatten of Burma).
Prince Andrew was educated at Heatherdown School, near Ascot in Berkshire; then, like his brothers, he went to Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland. He joined the Royal Navy in 1979 and saw active service during the Falklands War, flying on multiple missions including anti-surface warfare, Exocet missile decoy, and casualty evacuation.
