Who are the Port Adelaide Football Club?
Port Adelaide Football Club, also known as the Power, is a professional Australian rules football club based in the city of Adelaide, South Australia. The club’s senior team competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), while its reserves team competes in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Founded in 1870, Port Adelaide is the oldest professional sporting club in South Australia and the fifth-oldest club of any code in Australia. Since 2014, the club has been owned by a consortium led by billionaire real estate developer Graeme Wood.
One of Port Adelaide’s most prominent features is its unique history – it is the only pre-existing professional club to have been founded outside Victoria, and it is also distinguished as being both the first and oldest surviving “country” footy club. This gives Port Adelaide a different perspective from other clubs; instead of regarding themselves primarily as a Melbourne-based or Victorian institution, they see themselves as representative of football throughout Australia. This is reflected in their theme song “We Are Port Adelaide”, which contains lyrics about how “every port has its team”, meaning that wherever one goes in Australia there will be supporters of the Power.
This broad view of their place in Australian sport means that Port Adelaide has a very passionate and loyal supporter base, which extends not just across South Australia but throughout the country. The club has won 36 premierships between the SANFL (South Australian National Football League) and AFL (Australian Football League),
Why are they called the Power?
