Mora IK Hockey Club
Mora IK Hockey Club is a Swedish ice hockey club playing in the Mora IK Sweden Hockey League, the third highest level of ice hockey in Sweden. The club was founded in 1967 and played its first season in the Division 3 Hockey League. In 1984 Mora IK won promotion to Division 2, where it played for nine seasons before winning promotion to Division 1 in 1990. After two seasons in Division 1, Mora IK was relegated back to Division 2 and has since competed there ever since. The club has made one appearance in the Elite 8 of the Swedish Championships, in 2001.
Ugly Sweater Night
As the temperatures start to drop, so does interest in outdoor sports. Luckily for hockey fans, there’s still plenty of action to be found in Sweden’s top hockey league – Mora IK SHL.
On Ugly Sweater Night (November 17th), all teams in the league wear ugly sweaters to support their respective charities. The winning team receives a donation from each team in the league. This year, Mora IK is raising money for two charities: Hjärtat Rör För Lif (Heart Beats For Life) and Barncancerfonden (The Children’s Cancer Foundation).
Fans can show their support by buying an ugly sweater at the team store ahead of the game, or attending the game and wearing an ugly sweater during warm-up. All funds raised will go directly to these two great causes.
Rules of the Game
The Mora IK Sweden Hockey League SHL Ugly Sweater is an annual charity game played between teams of players from the top two divisions in Sweden. The game is played on home ice of the team with the worst record at the end of the regular season. The game was started in 2002 as a way to raise money for charity. In 2016, the game raised over SEK 580,000 for charity.
The rules of the game are simple. Each team consists of six skaters and one goaltender. The goal is to score by putting the puck into the opposing net, and playing in accordance with league rules applies except that no player may carry more than three sticks at any time, and goaltenders are allowed to use their hands. If a player violates these rules, they are given a penalty shot. A player can also be penalized if they attempt to remove or obstruct another player’s equipment while on the ice.
