Well known for their stage performances, which included the use of pyrotechnics, make-up and costumes, the group rose to prominence in the mid-1970s with their hit singles “Beth”, “I Was Made for Lovin’ You”, and “Rock and Roll All Nite”. The band has gone through multiple lineup changes, with Stanley and Simmons being the only members to appear on every album. Criss appeared on four studio albums before leaving the group in 1980; he was replaced by Eric Carr. Carr died in 1991 of brain cancer and was succeeded by Bruce Kulick. In 1996, Frehley left Kiss after disagreements with Simmons regarding creative control. He was replaced by Eric Singer.
Kiss released their self-titled debut album in February 1974. It features a downplayed version of their trademark make-up and stage costumes. The album was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City during January 1974. It peaked at number 87 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 500,000 copies worldwide. The single “Strutter” peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart while “Firehouse” reached number 68.
