The formation of Hertha BSC as a football club can be traced back to November 26, 1911 when members of the Berlin athletic club Reichs Tennis Club founded Sport-Club Hertha in the Königsallee. The team played its first competitive match in May 1912 against FC Germania Berlin which ended in a 3-3 draw. In 1920, Hertha merged with Reichs Tennis Club and changed its name to Sport-Club Hertha Berlin.
After World War II, the team began play in lower leagues until it was promoted to the Oberliga (East) in 1948 where it finished as runners-up. The following year, Sport-Club won promotion to the newly formed Oberliga Nord (Northern) where it spent six seasons before being relegated back down. In 1958, Sport-Club joined forces with Tennis Borussia Berlin and took on the name Hertha BSC Berlin/Dresden.
In 1963, Hertha became part of the new Bundesliga and finished third behind 1. FC Nürnberg and Eintracht Frankfurt that season. After finishing second behind Bayern Munich two years later, they were crowned champions in 1970 after defeating Fortuna Düsseldorf 4-1 on aggregate in the final playoff game. They repeated as champions two years later after winning their group while also reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup where they lost 2–1 on aggregate to Feyenoord Rotterdam.
