The Girondins de Bordeaux are a professional football team based in the city of Bordeaux, in the southern region of France. The Girondins play in Ligue 1, the top division of French football. The club was founded in 1881 as a group of rugby union enthusiasts known as “Les Girondins de Bordeaux”.
After winning the Coupe de France in 1978, they reached the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1979 and reached their first UEFA Champions League final appearance in 1984, where they lost 2–1 to Barcelona.
