Mitchell Ness
Mitchell Ness was an All-Pro cornerback for the Oaklan
d Raiders from 1978 to 1988. After his playing career, he became a broadcaster for the Raiders. In 2002, Ness was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He currently serves as a color commentator for NFL games on NFL Network.
In 2004, Ness designed a special edition jersey for the Oakland Raiders in honor of their 50th anniversary. The jersey was made up of 25 different patches and featured “official team proportions” according to Ness. The jersey was auctioned off at charity events and raised more than $200,000 for victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
In 2009, Ness ventured into other business ventures including launching a line of beer called “The Mitchell Ness Brewing Company.” The beers are brewed in collaboration with craft brewers from around the country and are available in four flavors: IPA, Lager, Brown Ale, and Stout.
Las Vegas Raiders
The Oakland Raiders officially relocated to Las Vegas in 1984, and became the Las Vegas Raiders. The team adopted a black and silver color scheme, with a ” crossing the desert “logo. The first season in Sin City saw them finish 5-11, but they improved rapidly over the next few years, making the playoffs twice and winning one division title (1990). They would go on to win two more division titles (1991 & 1993) and qualify for the playoffs four additional times between 1990-96. In 1996, they were upset by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC wild card round.
After their playoff appearance in 1996, things went downhill for the Raider organization. They finished 4-12 in 1997 and 3-13 in 1998. The 1999 season was even worse as they finished 2-14. They hired Norv Turner as their new head coach that offseason, but it was too little too late. Turner was fired midway through the 2001 season after compiling a record of 10-38 (.220). The team then hired Art Shell as their new head coach, who led them to an 8-8 record his first year despite being plagued by injuries.
In 2002, Shell was fired after leading the Raiders to a 4-12 record. He was replaced by Mike Martz who led them to an 8-8 record his final year before being replaced by Tom Cable midway through 2003. Cable led them to an 8-8 record his second year before being fired midseason in 2004
