Barnsley FC: A Brief History
Barnsley Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The team play in League One, the third tier of English football.
They were established in 1879 as Barnsley St John’s Church of England Young Men’s Association Football Club and played their first ever competitive match in 1886 against Doncaster Rovers. In 1891 they merged with Oakwell United and became known as Barnsley Oakwell. The club changed its name to Barnsley FC in 1899 and reached the FA Cup Semi-finals in 1900 before b
eing denied by Newcastle United. In 1913 they lost to Liverpool in the FA Cup Final.
In 1919 Barnsley joined the Football League Second Division and went on to win promotion twice: once in 1922–23, and again in 1924–25. Between 1955 and 1960 they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup but lost both times to Manchester United. In 1963 they were relegated from Division Two but reached the Premier Division for the first time four years later.
They finished seventh in their first season but second-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers refused to sell their place at the top flight and so Barnsley were relegated back to Division Two. However, they won promotion back to Division One at the first attempt and have remained there ever since, making one further appearance in UEFA competition (in 1971).
