In 1963 they were relegated from Division Two but reached the Premier Division for the first time four years later.

They finished seventh in their first season but second-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers refused to sell their place at the top flight and so Barnsley were relegated back to Division Two. However, they won promotion back to Division One at the first attempt and have remained there ever since, making one further appearance in UEFA competition (in 1971).
