Aces win their second straight WNBA championship

The Las Vegas Aces clinched their second consecutive championship on October 18, edging out the New York Liberty 70-69 and winning the series 3-1. This victory marked the Aces’ second title and the first back-to-back championships since the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2001-2002 seasons. Despite being one of the original WNBA teams from 1997, the Liberty have yet to secure a title.

The Aces’ roster, boasting talents like the recent MVP A’Ja Wilson, finals MVP Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Kelsey Plum, and the legendary Candace Parker, has earned them the “superteam” moniker. However, Parker had to sit out due to a foot injury.

Guiding the Aces is Becky Hammon, previously an NBA coach for the San Antonio Spurs and a recent inductee into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Her stellar leadership led the Aces to a record 34-6 season, the highest in WNBA history.

In the finals, the Aces showcased their dominance, with standouts from Young, Plum, Wilson, and Gray, paving their way to the title. The climax was Game Four, a nail-biter that ended in the Aces’ favor as the Liberty failed to capitalize on the final shot.

After this outstanding series, Wilson was rightfully named the MVP, averaging impressive stats of 21 points and 12 rebounds.

As the next WNBA season approaches in May, all eyes will be on potential top draft picks, with Iowa Hawkeyes’ Caitlin Clark and LSU’s Angel Reese being the ones to watch.
