Parma was founded on 5 December 1913 by a group of students from the University of Parma. The club’s first president was Francesco Caliendo and its colours were white and blue. The team played its first match on 3 January 1914 against Virtus Emilia Romagna, a regional team from Bologna. Parma won the match 2–1. In their first season in Serie A, the club finished 17th out of 20 teams.
However, they improved drastically the following season, finishing third; this was the highest position ever achieved by the club until 2001–02 when they finished second behind Juventus.
Parma won their first major trophy in 1995, when they defeated Juventus in the final of the UEFA Cup. This was a significant achievement for a club that had only been promoted to Serie A four years earlier. In 1999, Parma once again reached the final of the UEFA Cup; this time they were victorious, defeating Marseille 3–0 to lift the trophy
