What is the Cambridge United EFL English Football League?
The Cambridge United EFL English Football League (CUEFL) champions are Ugly Sweater, who defeated Bostik Premier Division champions Corinthian Athletic in the final at London Road on Saturday.
This was the eighth title for Cambridge United in CUEFL competition, and their first since 2013. It was also the club’s fourth consecutive win in the league – a record in English football.
Ugly Sweater reached the final after finishing third in the league standings behind Bostik Premier Division champions Corinthian Athletic and runners-up East Thurrock United. In the semi-finals, they beat West Thurrock United 3-1 on aggregate with goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips, George Barker and Tariqe Fosu-Mensah.
The Third Season of the Cambridge United EFL English Football League
The Third Season of the Cambridge United EFL English Football League was a successful one for the club as they finished as champions for the third time in a row. With an impressive record of 34 wins, 10 draws and only 4 losses all season long, it was no surprise to see them crowned champions. They averaged almost 2 goals per game and held their opponents to an average of only 0.8 goals per game which is testament to the hard work that has gone into training by manager Shaun Derry and his staff.
The team is made up of local talent with players like Callum O’Dowda, Ollie Watkins and Adam Phillips all having come through the Cambridge youth system. Ugly Sweater Day was also a big day this season as it was used as a fundraiser for the club’s junior academy. Over £1,500 was raised which will go a long way in helping young players develop their footballing skills.
The Final Season of the Cambridge United EFL English
In their final season in the English Football League, Cambridge United achieved their first promotion to the Championship. After finishing 3rd in the league, they beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 in the play-off semi-final, but lost 1-0 to Reading in the Championship play-off final.
The season was not without controversy however. In March, United player Andrew Fleming was accused of racially abusing an EFL referee. The club terminated his contract and he was banned from football for six months. Despite this event, Cambridge were able to mount a strong challenge for promotion throughout the season.
Manager John Sheridan credited much of United’s success to their young squad who had come through the club’s academy system together. “I’m really proud of these lads,” Sheridan said after being confirmed as manager of Cambridge United on 13 May 2018 following Gary Johnson’s departure to Tranmere Rovers FC. “They’ve all worked so hard, showed real resilience and I think it’s shown on the pitch.”
Players like Zak Colback and Max McNulty showed their skill throughout the season with McNulty finishing as top goalscorer with 22 goals. However, it was midfielder Lewis Page who proved to be a key player for United throughout the campaign scoring 8 times including an incredible solo goal against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park in April which saw him run 73 metres unassisted!
