9-1-1 Boss Previews Season 8: Bobby Retired, Buck Struggling, Eddie Mourning, and Athena Confronting Her Past

Co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear offers a glimpse into what’s coming in the eighth season of 9-1-1 as the ABC first-responder drama gears up for its return.

Following an intense seventh season that featured a dramatic Poseidon adventure and ended with Bobby (Peter Krause) and Athena’s (Angela Bassett) home destroyed and Bobby’s resignation from the 118, Minear and his team were determined not to undo the developments of the previous season. “We aimed to build on, not erase, what happened at the end of last season,” Minear says.

This means that Gerrard (Brian Thompson) will remain as the new captain of the 118, and the storyline will continue with Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) now fostering Mara (Askyler Bell) from Karen (Tracie Thoms) and Hen (Aisha Hinds), who are grappling with a vengeful local councilwoman. Additionally, Buck (Oliver Stark) is navigating a relationship with Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.), and Eddie (Ryan Guzman) is dealing with the fallout from a kiss with someone who resembles his son’s late mother.

Season 8 will kick off with a dramatic disaster involving a swarm of bees. “We just wanted to generate some buzz,” Minear quips to Entertainment Weekly, adding that the idea came from a conversation with co-creator Ryan Murphy. “He loved what we did with the Poseidon Adventure storyline last year and asked about other great ’70s disaster movies. I suggested The Swarm, and he was enthusiastic about it.”

Unlike previous seasons where the show teases a major disaster at the beginning and then rewinds to catch up with the 118, this season will “hit the ground running,” Minear reveals. The bee disaster will eventually lead to a slightly different crisis by the end of the first hour, setting the stage for an eventful season.
