5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Bakersfield Area
A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Mettler area on Tuesday night, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, initially recorded at 5.1 magnitude, occurred at 9:09 p.m. and had a depth of approximately 6 miles.
Location and Impact The earthquake’s epicenter was near the White Wolf fault, which was responsible for the 7.5 magnitude quake that hit the Bakersfield area in 1952. Geologist Dr. Lucy Jones clarified that Tuesday’s quake did not occur on the White Wolf fault.
Following the initial tremor, a 4.5 magnitude aftershock was recorded just 45 seconds later. The tremors were felt throughout the southern Central Valley and extended into Los Angeles County.
Infrastructure and Safety The California Highway Patrol reported that a boulder briefly obstructed multiple southbound lanes just south of Grapevine Road. Caltrans crews worked for several hours to clear the debris, with all lanes reopening shortly after midnight.
Both the Kern County Fire Department and Bakersfield police confirmed that there were no reports of injuries or significant damage.
Previous Seismic Activity The region has experienced a series of earthquakes recently, with a notable 4.1 magnitude quake on June 24, followed by more than a dozen subsequent quakes.
Authorities continue to monitor the area for any further seismic activity and are urging residents to stay prepared for potential aftershocks.
