The History of ZZ Top
The American rock band ZZ Top was formed in Houston, Texas in 1969. The group consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard. The band has released fifteen studio albums, four live albums, and sixty-seven singles. Their first album, “First Album”, was released in 1971. The band’s style is a blend of blues, boogie-woogie, and hard rock.
ZZ Top’s 1973 album “Tres Hombres” featured the hit single “La Grange”, which helped to propel the album to number four on the Billboard 200 chart. The album also included the tracks “Jesus Just Left Chicago” and “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers”. “Tres Hombres” was followed by the album “Fandango!” in 1975. This album featured the singles “Tush” and “Heard It On The X”, both of which reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The band’s next album, 1977’s “Tejas”, saw a change in direction musically for the group. The album featured more of a country influence and included the track “Arrested For Driving While Blind”. ZZ Top returned to their blues roots with their 1979 release “Deguello”. This album contained the hit single “I Thank You”, which reached number fifteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The Music of ZZ Top is a limited edition release of the American rock band’s 1971 album, ZZ Top’s First Album. The album was released on November 11, 2016, by Craft Recordings. The release includes the band’s original LP, newly remastered from the analog tapes by Grammy-winning engineer Bob Ludwig, as well as a bonus disc of previously unreleased recordings.
ZZ Top’s First Album was recorded in 1970 and released in 1971 on Bill Ham’s London Records label. The album was produced by Bill Ham, and engineered by Terry Manning. It features the band’s original lineup of Gibbons (guitar), Hill (bass), and Beard (drums). The album contains the band’s first hit single, “La Grange,” which peaked at #41 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
This release marks the first time that ZZ Top’s First Album has been available on vinyl in North America. The album has been out of print on vinyl since 1972.
