Overview

The Highlanders AFL Rugby Classic is a professional rugby union match between the Highlanders and Australian side Western Force that is held at the Trafalgar Park in Invercargill, New Zealand on Saturday 14 September. The match is being played as part of the 2019 Super Rugby season, and will be the seventeenth meeting between the two sides.

The Highlanders are co-owners of the competition with New Zealand Rugby Union and will also host one of their semi-final matches in 2020. The team’s inaugural season in 1996 was played as part of the SANZAR competitions but they were expelled from the competition after failing to meet financial obligations. They rejoined SANZAR for its inaugural 2014 season and have since won four titles, most recently in 2018.

The Western Force are a former Super Rugby franchise that joined the National Rugby Championship (NRC) for its first season in 2016. They reached the finals series but lost to Australia’s Queensland Reds. The Force returned to Super Rugby for 2019 but have struggled, having been beaten by both Melbourne Rebels and Reds in their first two matches.
